WREKage -- Atlanta's Only True Metal Radio Show

Serving Atlanta's Metal and Thrash Community Since 1982

1999 and 2000 Logged Playlists

This is where I first began tracking playlists, first for my own part of the show, and later, the entire show's playlists.

Sometime In December, 1999

This is the oldest playlist I kept a copy of -- judging from the local showdates scribbled on the sheet, it looks like sometime in December. My "quasi-official" progressive/melodic metal segment during WREKage didn't start until c. February or March.

February 12th, 2000

This is the oldest dated playlist I have in my archives, and this was a well-received show indeed, with lots of cool and offbeat stuff and good calls (including one from the guys in the Atlanta band Abwhore, en route from an out-of-town show). Jonathan and Sam were away, but our friend George, a licensed station operator, was in the studio, so we were free to play anything we wanted.

February - March, 2000

At this early point, I wasn't routinely copying each week's playlist for my records. Here's an undated playlist between February 12th and March 11th. You can tell Jim "Lamentations of the Flame Princess" Raggi was also in the studio, judging from the inclusion of certain tracks. :)

March 11th, 2000

March, April and May, 2000

At this early point, I wasn't routinely copying each week's playlist for my records, but the records pick up with May 19th and continue, reasonably steadily, through the present day.

Jim Raggi's stamp on this show (Gamma Ray, Halford) is easy to spot. :)

August 18th, 2000

Had some good in-studio requests and suggestions for this show. :)

August 25th, 2000

September 1st, 2000

No show; I was in Chicago for Worldcon.

Sept. 30, 2000

No show, or playlist not captured. Probably the latter. :)

October 7th, 2000

This playlist is partial, since the copier at the station didn't copy the setlist right. Tim took over after I finished, and we ended the broadcast at around 3am this particular week. A fun return, even if just temporarily, to the sounds of WREKage Past. :)

October 14th, 2000

Fun show. The Stormlord CD was brought by Jim Raggi, and the Soulfly track was my roommate Tim Hurd's (they had a show here the following week).

October 20th, 2000

Great show, with Jim Raggi in the studio. Several tracks, namely the second In Flames and Dimmu Borgir songs, the new Cradle of Filth, and the Dream Theater cover, were requests. Vastion and Lilitu are both Atlanta bands. We also got good calls, including a cool call about the Evergrey track.

October 27th, 2000

Another very fun show -- we even had a request for Nightwish before I started. Several upcoming shows to push, so we played In Flames, Nevermore, Shadow's Fall and Dio (!) with a purpose. (Jim Raggi had also brought some Yngvie, but I put the kabosh on that as being maybe a bit toooo silly. :)) I also played Type O Negative, once a staple of WREKage, for the first time in at least a year, since it was close to Halloween and we got a request for it. I'd actually brought Bloody Kisses down to the station for this precise purpose. Type O Negative and Vio-lence are the only two national acts who have ever played a WREKage benefit concert. :) (And then Tim Hurd took over with thrash-type stuff until the end of the broadcast.)

November 3rd, 2000

No show for me this particular week -- I was in Athens, Georgia, for one of my favorite (although non-metal) bands, Ozric Tentacles. :)

November 10th, 2000

First show after receiving some kewl stuff in the mail and first show after a one-week absence. I was somewhat tired and Jim Raggi had to be at work early the next morning, so we started at around midnight and played for about an hour. I forgot to write the precise setlist down, so this is partly from memory. :)

November 17th, 2000

For this week, Jim R. decided to stay home (weather was crappy) so from 1 to 2 am it was all me. It was an unusually quiet night on the phones; requests included Evergrey and Nightwish and we got "wow, who is this?" calls regarding Evergrey and Control Denied (as if we hadn't played CD at least five times before....) A cool chap named Sean from the local band Necrolord hung out in the studio during most of the broadcast -- he must be cool; he knew every word to "Dreaming Neon Black." :)

November 24th, 2000

No WREKage show this week; Sam was out of town for Thanksgiving and Jonathan didn't have a station key.

December 1st, 2000

Relatively quiet night -- Sam was supposed to get there late, but never showed, so after I started at around 12:40 I just kept going until we yielded to a guy who was coming in to a jazz overnight show at a little after 2am. Nice long set with a bit of everything. I was able to play several requests and several songs drew good phone calls.

December 8th, 2000

Very fun show here, with cool folks in the studio including Sean from Necrolord, as well as some knowledgeable requests (Angel Dust, for example). This was about 90 minutes and started at around 12:45 or so.

December 15th, 2000

I started early tonight, which was kinda cool since my roommate Tim was hungry. I started at around 12:15 and finished at around 1:20 am Saturday. For grins, I'm posting the entire WREKage playlist up through my last song, so you can compare the "regular" show with the (mostly) more melodic bands I play. :) I've left the list exactly as Jonathan typed it in. I gave away tickets for In Flames/Nevermore/Shadow's Fall and we had a LOT of calls for them, and quite a few good calls on the bands I played. After I finished with the Devin Townsend track, Sam took over for a while, and Tim and I went to get something to eat. Then we came back and Tim played some old-school stuff until 3pm, when we ended the show.

December 22nd, 2000

Here again I'll list the "regular" show contents in smaller type, followed by my segment in regular type. Jim Raggi was in the studio and kindly provided several coool CDs to play, including the new Opeth...at least two months before the street-date and a month before promos were to be mailed by the label!

December 29th, 2000

Just my playlist this time, not the whole show :) There was a power failure during "Damage Inc." that killed everything, including the computer on the control board where we type in the weekly setlist, so the order here might be a bit off. Played the title track from the new Opeth CD, probably the first time it's been broadcast also.
